Barnsley - Chelsea 1-0 FA Cup Goal Highlights 08-03-2008
Goals: Odejayi 66'
Barnsley jolted defending champion Chelsea 1-0, and Portsmouth won 1-0 at Manchester United on a penalty kick in major upsets Saturday in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
Kayode Odejayi scored on a 66th-minute header for Barnsley. The League Championship club won 2-1 at Liverpool earlier in the tournament. Barnsley is only four points above the relegation zone in the league immediately below the Premier League and could drop to League One next season.
Having beaten two of English soccer’s heavyweights, Barnsley earned a place in FA Cup semifinals at Wembley Stadium. The last time it got this far was in 1912 when it went on to win the famed trophy.
“I can’t believe it. We went to Anfield and we put on a show and came away with a result and everybody thought we couldn’t do it again,” Barnsley manager Simon Davey said. “We had a game plan that obviously worked. I’m speechless at the moment. I can’t believe we’ve really done it. We’re in the semifinal of the cup, I’ve never been to Wembley.”
Chelsea manager Avram Grant, criticized for falling behind Arsenal and Manchester United in the league title race, said it was his worst day in soccer since he took over from Jose Mourinho in September.
“I’m very, very disappointed but all the credit to Barnsley,” he said. “They showed a lot of spirit. They won against Liverpool, they won against us so I congratulate them.
