First-place Arsenal was held to a 2-2 tie Saturday by lowly Birmingham City in a Premier League game in which Eduardo da Silva of the Gunners broke his leg.

Eduardo, a Brazilian-born striker, was tackled by Martin Taylor on a play that angered Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

“I think this guy should never play football again,” Wenger said. “What is he doing on the football pitch? I feel that goes around with the idea for a long time that, to stop Arsenal, you have to kick Arsenal. I knew that was coming for a long time now.”

Eduardo was to lead Croatia at the European Championship in June, but now his season, and possibly his career, is over.

James McFadden’s free kick gave Birmingham the lead in the 28th minute. Theo Walcott scored his first Premier League goals for the Gunners in the 50th and 55th minutes. Arsenal appeared to be hanging onto another victory but Gael Clichy upended Stuart Parnaby in the fourth minute of injury time and McFadden made the penalty kick.

Arsenal’s lead was cut to three points because Manchester United won 5-1 at Newcastle five weeks after routing the Magpies 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Birmingham: Maik Taylor, Kelly, Martin Taylor, Ridgewell, Murphy, Larsson (Nafti 66'), Johnson, Muamba, Kapo (Zarate 59'), McFadden, Forssell (Parnaby 15').

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Senderos, Clichy, Walcott (Denilson 89'), Fabregas, Flamini, Hleb (Gilberto 89'), Eduardo (Bendtner 8'), Adebayor.
