City, so dominant at home, failed on the road again as Jermain Defoe came off the bench to win it for Spurs eight minutes from time.

Tottenham went ahead at the end of the first half through a clearly offside Pascal Chimbonda following a harshly awarded freekick, before City sub Rolando Bianchi crashed in a header from a corner after an hour.

City had Stephen Ireland sent off for a bad challenge seconds before Defoe's winner.
