Halftime: 1-0; Attendance: 19,700

Sporting beat Dynamo Kiev 3-0 after Brazilian defender Anderson Polga set them on their way with a first-half penalty in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Sporting, who knew they would finish third in Group F behind Manchester United and AS Roma, went ahead when Brazilian striker Liedson was fouled inside the penalty area by Andriy Nesmachniy. His compatriot Polga scored from the spot in the 35th minute.

Dynamo midfielder Oleg Gusev hit the post after 62 minutes before the Lisbon side, who were already assured of a place in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, doubled their lead in the 67th with a close-range shot by captain Joao Moutinho.

Dynamo goalkeeper Taras Lutsenko made several fine saves, especially in the second half, but could do nothing to stop Liedson putting the result beyond doubt two minutes from time.

"There aren't many reasons to be upset with our performance in the Champions League although we are all a little sad to drop out of the competition", Sporting coach Paulo Bento told reporters.

"We know we are not the main favourites in UEFA Cup but we have an objective which is to move forward," he added.

Sporting finished on seven points but Dynamo did not collect a single point after scoring just four goals and conceding 19.

"We showed no character or spirit and in this fashion we can't play at this level," said Dynamo acting coach Oleg Luzhny. "There is no explanation to what happened. That's the way it is. I believe in the players but can't do more than this."

Luzhny will be replaced next month by former Russia manager Yuri Syomin, 60, who becomes Dynamo's fourth coach in less than three months after Anatoly Demyanenko, Josef Sabo and Luzhny all failed to revive the struggling premier division club.
